The First Bestseller in American Novel History

Описание к видео The First Bestseller in American Novel History

I love exploring classic novels. There's something about a book from another time. It reminds me of a foreign film, in that you learn the differences between then and now; yet are amazed at how much there was then that really is no different at all from now.

This week, I bring to you the 19th century classic, Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush, written by Ian McLaren (I keep thinking it's "Beyond the Bonnie Brier Bush" and really hope I didn't call it that in the video!). This novel was so popular at its release that it topped the first-ever Publisher's Weekly best-seller list. It inspired a song (which I couldn't find), several stage plays, and a silent film, sadly lost to the ages. Join me as I give a review, a little information on the author, and read a few excerpts. And if you'd like to get a copy for yourself, there are many to be had through Ebay, Etsy, and Amazon (not sponsored, I just heartily recommend you give this a try).

Another excerpt read by someone else, if you're tired of listening to me (no surprise):
