Old-Time TOTW

Описание к видео Old-Time TOTW

Old-Time TOTW #231 is Garfield from the playing of Stanley E. Bailey (27 October 1914- 27 August 1988) of Nashville, Berrien County, GA. He was the son of Seaborn Edward Bailey (1880-1959) and Anna Dean (1881-1958). Source: public documents.

I was not able to find out much about Mr. Bailey. He began playing the fiddle as a child, as evidenced by a photo of him taken when he was nine years old with a homemade fiddle. It appears to be a cigar box fiddle with a very short bow. When he was in his early 20s, he was Georgia State Fiddle Champion in 1932 and 1934. His occupation listed in the 1940 census is farmer.

If anybody has more information that should be added about Stanley Bailey, please let me know in the comments below.

Bailey was recorded by Joe LaRose in 1982 playing the tune Garfield. It is on Larry Warren's Slippery-Hill website (https://www.slippery-hill.com/content..., and notation is found in The Milliner-Koken Collection of American Fiddle Tunes by Clare Milliner and Walt Koken.

Joining me are friends Marc Harris on banjo (Cincinnati, OH) and Jeanie Thieken on guitar (Hocking Hills, OH).

Jeanie, along with Nick Weiland and Mark Barsamian, play in the band Jeanie and the Dreamers.
