Microbiology: Indole Test for E. coli

The indole biochemical test in the microbiology lab is still used today! A positive indole test equals a pink colour. Mainly used on the urine bench (related to UTIs) to bench call E. coli

Indole positive enterics:


E. coli
Proteus vulgaris
Klebsiella oxytoca
Edwardsiella
Pleisiomonas
Other enterics can show variability in indole reaction, e.g., Shigella spp.
