Executive Function & Learning

Описание к видео Executive Function & Learning

In this episode of "Dyslexia Discussions & More," hosts Dr. Tim Conway, neuropsychologist and published researcher, and Stephen Yearout, Dyslexia Advocate with empowered Dyslexia, explore the depths of Executive Function and its role in learning, particularly in individuals with dyslexia and other SLD’s like AD/HD. Executive Function includes 5 crucial elements and we’ll discuss these elements in detail. However, Executive Function is also dependent upon other sensory, motor and cognitive brain systems, like language skills, visual processing, memory, sensorimotor skills, attention/focus, mood/anxiety and much more. Thus, while many individuals with Dyslexia and other Specific Learning Disorders may struggle with the efficiency of their Executive Function, there is not a specific disorder in the DSM-5 for poor Executive Function. Thus, there is no diagnosable Executive Function disorder. However, parents at home will certainly agree that research in neuroscience and neuropsychology needs to better study the importance of these sensory-cognitive processes, called Executive Functions, and how they interfere with students and adults daily lives and how to help improve Executive Function too. Are there research studies showing that interventions targeting Executive Function can significantly improve these skills? Does the new popular service of offering to sell parents time with an “Executive Function Coach” really improve Executive Functions? This important question will certainly be part of this episode's discussion.

Also, in this episode of “Dyslexia Discussions & More” podcast, Dr. Conway and Mr. Yearout will discuss how deficits in Executive Function can impact learning and what can be done to address these challenges from the approach of empowering foundational skills and then empowering Executive Function. Mr. Yearout will share insights from the dyslexia community, focusing on strategies that have been promoted as supporting dyslexic students with executive function struggles - do they work? This episode will also explore the emerging evidence supporting the role of Executive Function in learning disabilities, a fascinating chicken or the egg question that you may be surprised to learn more about. Join us for another enlightening new episode of the “Dyslexia Discussions & More” podcast that empowers listeners with valuable information for helping children, teens and adults achieve their full potential.
