Today I will show you the treatment of rib injuries using Graston technique. Rib injuries in all sports including jiu-jitsu can really be tough to treat. Sometimes getting muscle work in with the hand is difficult which is why Graston is a great technique for these injuries.

When there is a rib injury, most people feel pain or discomfort in the front of the rib region. This is usually a result of a disruption or injury to the costal cartilage or rib cartilage. The ribs are held together by joints in the back of the spine. As they come around and wrap into the front of the rib cage, they are attached by softer and more elastic tissue, which is the cartilage. This area is designed to be more pliable to help absorb forces. It is also an area where the abdominals attach.

When you hurt the rib cartilage, you will also have to work and treat the abdominals, not just the rib injury itself.

Injuries to the ribs are typically caused by contact sports or violent movements such as sneezing and coughing. The intense trauma, strain, or repetitive impact on the rib cage can the cartilage to pop or become strained. When this occurs, many people say that they heard a pop in the ribs.
