About Raag: Mallar, the term is traditionally associated with the mood welcoming the monsoon rains.The term is explained thus: 'mal' is dirt or impurity and 'haran' implies removal of dirt by the rains. There is cool breeze and showers. The fields are soaked in water. Crops flourish. Dusty roads are washed clean. Birds perch on treetops getting their feathers wet and washed , peacocks dance. Women look forward to their husbands returning from distant towns where they went for work or business. Patwardhan's version of Malhar closely resembles raga Miya ki Malhar as he has himself said, but he prefers to call it Malhar.

About Artist:

Pandit Kaivalya Kumar Gurav is a third generation singer from the Kirana Gharana (singing style) of Indian classical music. Gurav belongs to a family of musicians. His grandfather, Pt. Ganapatrao Gurav, was a disciple of Bhaskar Buva Bhakle, the first in line from Ustad Abdul Karim Khan who was the founder of the Kirana Gharana. His father groomed the young Gurav in vocal skills who then started his musical career with Marathi Natyasangeet and then entered to Khayal singing

This baithak was held at the initiative of Ved Gupta, founder of bazm e Khas foundation live concerts.
