ABSTRACT OF TALK

Biodiversity studies in Philippine forests show high variation and species. For instance, the endemicity of Mt. Banahaw de Lucban can range from 66-76% but with some forest tree species considered as threatened based on the IUCN List of Threatened Species in the Philippines and DENR List of Threatened Philippine Plants and their categories updated in DAO 2017-11. With the National Greening Program in year 2011 that expands up to 2028, our native forest tree species is a priority for seedling production and species conservation. So, crafting new greening strategies are essential in adopting scientific ways of producing high quality and needed volumes of planting stocks of native trees through clonal nurseries and vegetative propagation techniques. Southern Luzon State University through its Clonal Forestry facility aims to generate and promote science and technology interventions as a platform in the production and conservation of selected indigenous forest trees species of Mt. Banahaw de Lucban and vicinities such as the selection, characterization, and mapping of germplasm; propagation protocol using mycorrhiza technology and rooting hormones; and molecular characterization through DNA barcoding. Developing alternatives and simplifying operations are needed to recover the degraded and deforested lands in our country. Clonal forestry through quality planting material production can be an answer in areas where certain tree species are increasingly becoming rare and threatened to ensure better biodiversity in sustainable forest management, while the role of local communities as stewards of our vulnerable ecosystem is as essential.
