I quite enjoyed using the Garmin Vivoactive 5, however, after having just finished testing the Garmin Venu 3, it felt slightly underwhelming. At 300 dollars the Vivoactive 5 is significantly cheaper than the Venu 3, which has a list price of 450 dollars. Just seeing the smaller screen of the Vivoactive 5 and knowing it as the older generation sensor, it just felt like I had downgraded. However, what about the sport and health tracking performance, is the Vivoactive 5 similar in performance to the Venu 3, or is the Vivoactive 5 just as capable? That is what we are going to test in the video. First, we will test the heart rate tracking performance during different types of exercises, second we will test the sleep stage tracking against an EEG reference, and third we will take a look at the GPS tracking consistency.

Hello everyone! For those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. Like I said, in this video we will test different aspects of the sports and health tracking of the Garmin Vivoactive 5. As regular viewers will know, I don’t like listing the specs of watches, but let’s briefly discuss what this watch can do, and what are the major differences compared to its slightly more expensive brother, the Venu 3. The most important difference for me is the fact that the Venu 3 has a newer heart rate sensor than the Vivoactive 5, which theoretically should improve performance of the Venu 3 over the Vivoactive in specific circumstances. But we will test this of course. The Venu 3 can also control your smart trainer and can connect to power meters, which the Vivoactive 5 cannot do. Also, the Venu 3 has a barometric altimeter, which could help track the number of stairs you climb more accurately for instance. Finally, the bezel around the screen looks significantly bigger on the Vivoactive 5, which is part of the reason it felt like a downgrade to me. OK, those are the most important differences in my opinion. However, what I really care about is performance. Is the Vivoactive 5 just as good as the Venu 3, or is there a noticeable difference? As always, let's start by testing the heart rate tracking accuracy of the Vivoactive 5, and also comparing this against the other watches out there.
