"Boats of Stone" was released in 1999 by Maine folk band Schooner Fare.

Spend any time in New England, and you’ll find a stone wall. Those walls are made of granite, and the granite came from right below our feet. In the early 1800s, There was a never-ending need for this stone and a never-ending supply to meet the demand. With readily available water transport, slabs of granite could be shipped to help create virtually any structure designed to last. The growth of the industry at an unprecedented rate forced mining operators and suppliers to seek any shipment possible. Despite New England's hearty shipbuilding industry, many of the schooners that found their way to these ports were decades old. These ships traveled down the eastern shoreline, up rivers, and through canals to provide stone to every inch of the nation.
The industry continued to grow until the late 1800s, when the use of bricks finally succeeded stone. Today, abandoned mines and quarries can be found throughout the western mountains and central highlands of New England. The song "Boats of Stone" recounts this history in a worthy fashion.
