After defeating Blue and obtaining all 16 Badges, the player makes their way to Mt. Silver where a familiar face challenges them to battle for one last time.

Unlike in vanilla Pokemon Crystal where all the rival fights are optional in Kanto, here the Rival is the penultimate boss of the game and the final trainer standing between you and Red and he's going to be a very difficult opponent to take down.

His team consists of Crobat, Porygon2, Alakazam, Dragonite, Feraligatr and Ho-Oh. The real standout here is Ho-Oh, Pokemon Gold's cover legendary and the strongest Pokemon BST wise alongside Lugia and Mewtwo. The rest of his team is a good mix of speed, power and bulk.

Crobat is the lead and its' main role is to spread confusion and deal as much damage as possible before going down and it accomplishes that with a set of Confuse Ray, Razor Wind, Shadow Ball and Giga Drain. Crobat can also withstand attacks that would KO it thanks to Focus Band, making it a very annoying Pokemon to face. With incredible speed and a max 15 SPD DV the only Pokemon that will be able to outspeed it is Electrode, so the best bet here is to equip a Miracleberry and counter with a super effective move, a Steel type can easily counter Crobat as it does not have the best moves against that type.

Porygon2 is next and it can be quite difficult to take down with no Fighting type moves as it has a great defensive typing and good mixed bulk, as well as access to held Leftovers and Recover. It also has Thunderbolt and Ice Beam as offensive options and Toxic to badly poison your Pokemon. The best way to deal with it to use a strong Fighting type, Typhlosion will do great against it.

Alakazam is the Paralysis support of the team with Thunder Wave and a very high Speed Stat. Not only that but it has STAB Psychic which is further boosted by a held Twistedspoon as well as Fire Punch and Thunder Punch for coverage, so walling it with a Steel types may not be the best choice here. A dark type like Tyranitar or Houndoom should be able to dispatch it however as it has no good options against Dark types.

Dragonite is an all-out attacker this time, forgoing Thunder Wave in favor of four attacking moves: Extremespeed, Thunderbolt, Outrage and Fire Blast. STAB Outrage is always powerful, while Thunderbolt and Fire Blast deals with Steel, Water and Ice types that may be tempted to come in. Dragonite just like Crobat is also holding a Focus Band so it can also withstand attacks that would knock it out. Extremespeed can very easily pick apart tired teams with Dragonite's great attack stat. As per usual Ice or Rock types are the best answer here.

Silver's starter Feraligatr is also all about offense with a set consisting of STAB Hydro Pump and Crunch, as well as Ice Beam and Rock Slide for coverage. Hydro Pump's damage is also boosted by a held Mystic Water. Grass types aren't going to have an easy time with Feraligatr having Ice Beam, but notably it doesn't have Earthquake this time, so Electric types should be able to deal with it, especially Pokemon like Jolteon.

Ho-Oh is Silver's new and most powerful Pokemon. With incredible bulk and fantastic mixed offense facing it is always a daunting task, especially as it has access to Sacred Fire, Solarbeam and Earthquake giving it incredible coverage against Pokemon that may try and counter it. It also runs Recover to restore HP and a Miracleberry to recover any status you may try to inflict on it. Ho-Oh does have a glaring 4x weakness to Rock however, so a Pokemon like Tyranitar or Aerodactyl can OHKO it with Rock Slide as long as it doesn't miss.

The Rival's team is extremely well-built with good coverage, status inflicting moves, two Pokemon with Recover, a very high BST and diverse defensive typings. Without a doubt this will be one of the toughest fights in the game. He does however have 3 Flying types and that can be exploited by Rock Pokemon.

This is the last time you will face off against him in a mandatory battle, but he can be fought in a rematch in the Indigo Plateau after you defeat him here, just like in the originals, he will have one change to his line-up there.
