A Cairngorm gravel bike adventure from Tomintoul. This short loop quickly gets you out in the remote wilderness of the northern Cairngorm mountains.

A ‘strenuous’ climb from Glen Avon gets you up the shoulder of Gael Charn which is then followed by a steep descent down into Glen Loin. This descent is rocky and technical but perfectly doable on a gravel bike - it would be a blast on a full sus MTB, but you’d have to haul it up there first though!

The ride down Glen Loin is sublime: it’s fast, flowy and, if you dare take your eye off the trail, opens up some stunning views of the Cairngorms, especially if there’s still some snow on the distant peaks. The route then joins Glen Avon which is also a beaut to ride. The River Avon is crystal clear and some of the rock pools in the upper reaches of the river would make for a great wild swimming dip. The trail is fast and, again, the scenery doesn’t disappoint. Before you know it, you’re back in Tomintoul, wondering how you got there so quickly having been out in the wilderness for most of the ride!
