'Rise Garden' at Bord Bia Bloom 2023 | Oberstown & Gaisce

Bord Bia Bloom is an annual gardening and horticulture festival held in the Phoenix Park, Dublin to showcase and celebrate the country's best in gardening and food production. This year, the festival featured "Rise Garden," a remarkable creation designed by young people from Oberstown Children Detention Campus as part of their Gaisce Award journey.

Collaborating with artist Joe Caslin and landscape designer Eugene Higgins, the garden represents the young people’s ability to change and the opportunity to make positive choices and transform their lives. Symbolism plays a crucial role in the design of a garden, with the garden itself representing the progress that the young people have made in overcoming challenges and their ability to look forward to a brighter future.

The garden was designed to evoke powerful emotions and meanings that would resonate with visitors on a deep level. For example, the garden's curved path symbolises the twists and turns of life and the journey towards growth and change. The choice of planting throughout the garden reinforces the garden's themes of growth, resilience, change and choices. The themes of hope and forgiveness encourage deep introspection and personal growth, while also serving as a symbol of the value of working together.
