Burial Waves opened for Jawbox; you can find their video here:    • 2022-07.23 Burial Waves @ the Black C...

I've had the good fortune of watching this band throughout their various album releases since the early 90s. My hometown had a small venue that booked indie rock/punk bands and Jawbox always played and brought other DC bands to open.

When I went away to college, I saw them play. While at college radio conferences, I made sure to attend where they played. Hell, when I relocated to DC after graduation, I always made time to watch the band when they announced a show. The last time I saw them was 2019 in Richmond, VA and they brought Hammered Hulls to open.

With my new videography hobby, I was determined to capture this band live. And I'm so glad I did. First off, the band invited Burial Waves to open, who've become my current DC band fave.

I almost didn't shoot this show. I had tickets for Burn in Richmond, but that show got canceled with refunds showing up immediately. With a free Saturday, making the trek back to the Black Cat was a no-brainer after filming Darkest Hour/Zao/Bloodlet a week earlier.

I parked myself stage left, where J Robbins tends to favor. This is opposite where Harlan Brooks tends to play with Kim Coletta in the middle. My view was primarily of J with everyone around him. Zac's playing can be seen behind J and I apologize for his minimization in my video. It's not intentional--just how the shot was framed.

Sound came out better than expected considering I used my trusty Shure mic. Video came out exemplary as usual. In it, you can see glimpses of my neighbor to the left. Every now and then, you'll find him air drumming to the music! I found that entertaining as I continued filming.

I counted 23 songs played during the set! The set list taped near the monitors featured 21 songs and counted two extra during the encore.

I grew up watching this band and was happy seeing them for the umpteenth time. And I'll go out of my way to watch them again should they come around...
