Story behind the Bhajan -
Maha Shivaratri had arrived again in 2018, bringing back the golden memories of the celebration in the immediate presence of Sai Shiva Maheshwar Himself. I remembered the glorious Lingodbhava in Prashanti Nilayam while the ecstatic multitude swayed and sang the lilting melody of bhajans. I was through with puja, riyaaz, and yogabhyasa and was now winding up the morning session to go downstairs for breakfast.
All of a sudden, I began to hum a Bengali bhajan describing Lord Shiva dancing with Mata Parvati—Hey Nataraj Jatarbadhon Porlokhulay Praloynachan Nachle Jokhan Apona Na Bhule. The grand poet Rabindranath Tagore describes the dance of Shiva in the most vivid and lucid way. I had picked up vignettes of this song from my mother, who was an ardent follower of Rabindra Sangeet. The poet describes the dance as the dance of final dissolution, in which the divine dancer is so immersed that He is oblivious of His matted hair that has been unknotted by the swirling force of His dance.
As I hummed this song sitting in front of the altar, a sudden desire to reach the abode of the Lord gripped me so tenderly. The longing to see the universe of Shiva—Shiva Lok—made me cry in ecstasy. Before long, I was repeating Hari Om Namah Shivaya until it began to take the form of a melody that sounded like Raag Ahir Bhairav, but with both the Madhyams, like in Raag Lalit, without sounding the Pancham. While Ahir Bhairav carried a profound and deep essence, the inclusion of the Tivra Madhyam added a lighter dimension and luster to that depth. It was just like Mother Parvati stepping into the steps of her Beloved, adding charm and grace to the divine romance.
I was witnessing my own fascination as more of the bhajan began to take concrete shape. A new bhajan was born on this day, in Raag Ahir Lalit. The impression that I will always carry with me from that wonderful session on Mahashivaratri is that of being at the foothills of Kailash, looking at the Lord and His consort dance the eternal dance of creation, preservation, and dissolution—as one among the denizens of that universe of Bhagawan Samba Sada Shiva.

Glory to Lord Shiva!
Shiva, the benevolent and mighty Mahadeva,
The innocent and ever-compassionate Sadashiva!
O Shankara, O Shankara, I sing your name ceaselessly,
Offering my reverence, surrender, and devotion to You, the fearless protector.
Clad in a tiger’s skin, wielding the Trishul and Damaru,
The destroyer of desire, adorned with sacred ash, radiating divine beauty.
Salutations to the Divine!
Glory to Lord Shiva!
