A positive attitude can change the way you think about insomnia and improve your sleep

"Good" sleepers and those with insomnia react to a bad night of sleep in very different ways — and this is one reason why it can be so difficult to get rid of insomnia.

Someone with insomnia might check the clock during the night and immediately become concerned that they only have two or three hours left to get some more sleep. Someone who sleeps without any thought or worry will check the clock and be happy and relieved that they still have the opportunity for two or three hours of additional sleep.

Put another way, someone with insomnia might immediately worry that they will have a terrible day after a bad night — but someone who doesn't really worry about sleep will recognize they had a bad night, give it no further thought, and because they haven't convinced themselves they'll now have a bad day, they go on to have a good day and sleep well the next night.

If you want to take steps to improve your sleep, it's important that you try to adopt a more positive attitude. Of course, this is easier said than done — it requires conscious effort. When you have a good night, spend time thinking about it and talking about it with others. When you have a bad night, just accept it and move on.

The less concerned you can be about sleep, the easier sleep will be.
