In a recent Facebook Q&A I did, I had a member of my online courses ask about how many hours of therapy are required for children with autism. How much applied behavior analysis is recommended is a common question I get asked, especially since the number 40 hours a week is thrown around a lot. In my experience in the autism treatment space, I usually see children with autism get between 20-40 hours of therapy a week. This number is however, heavily dependent on how severe the diagnosis of autism is, and how dangerous the child is to him/herself or others.

An important takeaway from today’s video is that we really need to focus on everyone in the child’s life applying the #ABA principles that are being taught. Too many times, professionals don’t involve parents enough into the practice, and parents start digging holes. As I discuss further in the video, intensive behavior intervention can easily be undone if not everyone’s on the same page. Just because the child spent 3 hours with a professional, but then the parents are undoing all of that, doesn’t mean the child will get any better. So rather than focusing on how much ABA treatment is required for the child, we should be thinking about how parents and professionals can work together to put in place ABA principles that work every minute of the day to give the child the best chance he/she has to reach his/her fullest potential.
