Located in the county of Northamptonshire, and around 12 miles southwest of Peterborough, is the town of Oundle.

The first written reference to a settlement here dates back to the 8th century courtesy of the famed Anglo-Saxon monk known as The Venerable Bede, who wrote that Saint Wilfrid died ‘in his monastery in the region of Oundle’.

In circa 963 AD, Oundle became the property of Peterborough Abbey, as granted by King Edgar. It remained in possession of the abbey until the Reformation in the 16th century. A market is believed to have existed here since the Anglo-Saxon era.

At the heart of the town is St Peter's Church. This dates from the Norman era, but was enlarged in the 13th century, with further additions in the 15th century. Its spire reaches a height of 210 feet (64 metres), making it the tallest in Northamptonshire.

In 1556 Laxton Grammar School was founded in Oundle, following the death of Sir William Laxton. Having been born in Oundle, Laxton became a Lord Mayor of London during the reign of Henry VIII. In his will he left funds for the foundation of a new grammar school. This later became Oundle School - a renowned public school (i.e. fee-charging). Among its famous graduates are Iron Maiden lead singer Bruce Dickinson and actress Lucy Brown.

In 1845 a railway station opened in Oundle. This formed part of the Northampton and Peterborough Railway engineered by Robert Stephenson. The line closed to passengers in 1964. Today, public transport to Oundle consists of direct buses from Peterborough, Corby, Kettering and various other nearby settlements.
