"Keep the change."

He takes it. She walks away. He looks at the dollar.

There's an address written across George Washington's face in black ink. 1140 Solida Road. And underneath it: "Please come tonight."

Josie was eleven. Every Saturday at five, her mom told her to go for a walk and not come back until nine. Every Saturday when she came back, the house smelled different. Her mom's eyes were wrong. There were boots by the door that weren't her dad's. Different boots every week.

She didn't have a phone. She couldn't call for help. So she wrote her address on a dollar bill and handed it to a stranger at a gas pump. Because people always take dollars.

She'd handed out six. Nobody came. Vernon "Bore" Teague — core driller, Chaplain of the Diamond Bore MC — was number seven. He read the dollar. He came.
