An End to Cash Bail

In 2018, Global Citizens made 9,432 calls to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office calling for the end cash bail in the state of New York. Following up on that, 34,753 Global Citizens signed a petition calling on Cuomo to follow through on his pledge to put an end to this system and lead the way for the nation to follow. Cuomo’s January 2019 Executive Budget proposal included bail reforms that would measure up to this commitment, but in the final hours of negotiations, his plans were heavily rolled back and he switched out his proposed legislation for a lesser version of bail reform. On April 1, NY State passed historic pretrial reforms that would remove the price tag on justice for a majority of those accused of a crime, though it doesn’t meet all our asks. In January 2020, the new legislation kicks in, and we will be watching this space closely to continue to ensure that New York lawmakers keep up the momentum to fully eliminating cash bail.
