Plot
As the North Western Railway's oldest engine, Edward feels sad about not pulling trains as often as he used to; the bigger and newer engines, Gordon, the mainline express engine, Henry and James, two mixed-traffic engines, tease him about this. The station pilot, Thomas, a cheeky and self-described "bright and cheerful" tank engine and Edward's oldest friend from his early days on the Island of Sodor, teases them back. The engines argue about who will be picked to pull the first train of the day until the controller of the railway, Sir Topham Hatt, arrives at the sheds and offers the job to Edward, seeing how sad he is. Edward excitedly accepts and proudly steams out of the sheds, much to the jealousy of the other engines.
Edward pulls the train very well, impressing the coaches, the passengers, the stationmaster, and his driver, Ted, who tells him he has a chance of going out again. Just then, Edward sees Gordon pulling a goods train. Though he dislikes pulling trucks, Gordon still boasts about being the "pride of the line", regardless of his jobs. Later, after a rest, Edward learns from Ted that Gordon got stuck on the main line hill and needs an engine to serve as a banker. Edward is hesitant at first, but Ted encourages him to do his best and to prove the other engines' insults wrong. Motivated, Edward builds up steam and sets off for the hill.
Meanwhile, Gordon's driver, Charlie, begs him to try to move up the hill himself, but Gordon argues that he just cannot do it because of the trucks holding him back. Edward arrives at the bottom of the hill and is ready to push, much to Gordon's disbelief. Edward pushes his very hardest, and Gordon eventually finds himself at the top of the hill. Gordon gets so excited and caught up in his ego that he leaves Edward far behind without thanking him, making Edward feel left out. At the next station, Ted cheers Edward up by saying he will give him a new coat of paint to make him the "smartest engine in the shed." Sir Topham Hatt, who had witnessed the event, arrives to congratulate Edward and tells him that he has a much bigger reward for him.
Back at Tidmouth Sheds, the other engines tease Gordon for getting stuck on the hill. As Gordon tries to defend his pride, Edward arrives and tells them that Sir Topham Hatt was so proud of him for all of his hard work, he gave him another day out. Edward asks the engines what they think, but they are speechless.
