Dirceu Vianna Junior, MW (master of wine), held an appreciated wine tasting at MUST - Fermenting Ideas 2019. Incidentally, the only winetasting at the three-day wine summit focusing on discussions and exchange of information.

Dirceu Vianna Jr. (Junior) was born and raised in Brazil where he studied law and forestry before moving to London in 1989. Junior became Brazil's first Master of Wine, MW, in 2008. The examen combined with long experience means countless jobs for Junior as a consultant in the wine industry, worldwide.

At MUST - Fermenting Ideas 2019, Junior had put together a wine tasting with the unknown grapes of Portugal. The wines were mostly white but there was also a flight of red wines.

The tasting, HIDDEN GEMS OF PORTUGAL, featured some of the unusual, yet undiscovered Portuguese wines.

How about wine of the green grapes: códega do larinho, verdelho, fonte cal, avesso, bical, jampal, azal and loureiro. Amongst eh more known in Sweden are verdelho and loureiro. But the others, wow - what exciting varieties and wonderful wines!

Among the blue grapes were already many known varieties for Vinbanken. Tinta grossa, sousao, alicante bouchet and ramisco. The last in the wine, "2009 Casal Santa Maria Ramisco" from DOC Colares was for me, the absolute highlight of the tasting.

The origin of Colares is close to Lisbon where the soil is more or less sandy. In Colares, the vines grown as ungrafted, that is, on their own roots, which is very uncommon because European "true" vines (vitis vinifera) are inoculated on American roots (other family branches, i e vitis labrusca) that are resistant to phylloxera vastatrix.
