An oil refinery or petroleum refinery is an industrial process plant where crude oil is transformed and refined into more useful products such as petroleum naphtha, gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt base, heating oil, kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas, jet fuel and fuel oils. Petrochemicals feed stock like ethylene and propylene can also be produced directly by cracking crude oil without the need of using refined products of crude oil such as naphtha. Oil refineries are typically large, sprawling industrial complexes with extensive piping running throughout, carrying streams of fluids between large chemical processing units, such as distillation columns. In many ways, oil refineries use much of the technology, and can be thought of, as types of chemical plants.An oil refinery is considered an essential part of the downstream side of the petroleum industry.According to the Oil and Gas Journal in the world, there are a total of 700 oil refineries in the world. Out of those, there are 42 oil refineries in Africa with a total name capacity of 3,217,600bpd.Jamnagar Refinery is the largest oil refinery in the world, since 25 December 2008, with a processing capacity of 1.24 million barrels. An Honoured mention is The Dangote Refinery owned by the Dangote Group that is under construction in Lekki, Nigeria. When complete, it will have a capacity to process about 650,000 barrels per day of crude oil and hence be the largest in Africa.

10. Engen Refinery (Paronas) – Capacity - 122,000 Barrels/D
Engen Petroleum is a South African oil company focusing on the downstream refined petroleum products market and related businesses. The company’s core functions are the refining of crude oil, the marketing of primary refined petroleum products and the provision of convenience services via an extensive retail network. Until 1990, it was part of Mobil and in 1993, it changed the brand name to Engen. The company is present in 17 countries and exports products to over 30 more countries, mostly in Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. Engen operates a refinery in Durban that has a nameplate capacity of 120,000 barrels per day and operates approximately 1,450 service stations across sub-Saharan Africa and Indian Ocean Islands. A number of Engen's service stations are operated on a franchise basis as well as operates its own transport fleet with approximately 180 bulk fuel tankers.Engen has partnered with numerous South African businesses, including Woolworths, Wimpy, Debonairs Pizza, and Steers, which have operations at certain Engen service stations.The company is also listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the Botswana Stock Exchange Domestic Company Index.

9. Sasol Refinery, (Sasol) – Capacity - 125,000 Barrels/D
Natref, South Africa's only inland crude oil refinery is a medium sized technologically advanced refinery, highly efficient in refining heavy crude oil. The Natref refinery is a joint venture between Sasol Oil Ltd and Total South Africa Ltd.Sasol is a global integrated chemicals and energy company spanning 30 countries. The company uses expertise and selected technologies to safely and sustainably source, manufacture and market chemical and energy products globally. Sustainability has become a major driver in business where advance chemical and energy solutions that contribute to a thriving planet, society and enterprise. The refineryhas prioritised four relevant Sustainable Development Goals to ensure business is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable. It is a public company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in South Africa and the New York Stock Exchange in the United States. The 70 years old refinery simplified and streamlined previously complex and broad portfolio to a leaner and market-focused business in 2020.

8. Sapref Refinery (Sapref) – Capacity - 125,000 Barrels/D
