Tangential fans & Cross-flow fans - ebm-papst A&NZ

Simon presents an introduction to tangential or cross-flow fans. He is showing a tangential duplex fan (two impellers driven by a single shaded-pole motor).

Tangential fans are called cross-flow fans because the air exits across the whole width of the impeller which creates low velocity and noise with laminar airflow across the whole length of the impeller. This is why they are typically used in domestic applications. The generated air flow is also very low, so the applications are somewhat limited. Larger products with high-efficiency EC motor are often used for electronics cooling.

This type of fan is available from ebm-papst in single or duplex versions.

The motor type in the product shown is a standard shaded-pole motor which is typically very inefficient. The efficiency can be improved by using an EC motor (single- or double-shafted). This allows the product to be speed controlled via 0-10V and increases the efficiency by 30-50%, depending on motor size. Impeller sizes range from 80 to 120mm.
