Deceleration is of massive importance, and we need to train this for all our athletes. For one thing, it's critical for injury prevention and reduction. We need to be able to absorb and withstand forces placed upon our bodies at various rates, so by training our muscles and structural tissue to decelerate properly, we'll be able to withstand, and utilize, these forces. After that, we need to be great at decelerating because most intermittent sports are all about decelerating and accelerating rapidly. The fast we can decelerate, the faster we can change directions or get around someone.
