The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent their final day in New Zealand visiting a police college and walking through Wellington's civic area.

Two police dog puppies had the Duke the Duchess of Cambridge in raptures as their tour of New Zealand drew to a close.

William and Kate were left grinning from ear to ear when they were introduced to the 12-day-old puppies during a visit to the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua, near the capital Wellington.

The Duke stroked one puppy as he held it while Kate clutched the other to her chest with both hands.

She seemed especially spellbound and said: "It wants to hide under my jacket. I think it can smell George."

Kate asked police commissioner Mike Bush: "What do you feed them?" and "Can they see yet?"

The German shepherd puppies were born on April 4 and were the first litter of bitch Gucci, from the Dog Training Centre, and stud Borg, by artificial insemination.

The royal couple did not let the constant rain dampen their visit and they sheltered under umbrellas as they talked to officers, police staff and police dog foster families.

The Duchess was wearing a dark skirt suit by New Zealand designer Rebecca Taylor.

Prince William and his wife Kate viewed police recruits training before laying a wreath at the wall or remembrance in memory of police officers who died in the line of duty.

Hundreds of people lined the streets of the city to get a glimpse of the royal couple as they walked through the civic area and signed the visitors' book.
The couple and their baby son George are due to arrive in Sydney later on Wednesday for the start of their Australia visit.
