Gotta Go! Fargo to Chicago by Train on the Amtrak Empire Builder 4K

One of the few downsides of living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada is that there are no direct passenger rail links from our fair city to destinations south into the United States. However, there is a possible link by driving south for two hours to Grand Forks, North Dakota or three hours to Fargo, ND. Both places have Amtrak stations where it's possible to connect with the Empire Builder train west to Seattle or Portland or east to Chicago.

We've been wanting to put this to the test for some time and, courtesy of an Amtrak seat sale this spring (2024), we decided to give it a go with a brief trip from Fargo to Chicago and return. The deal was 40% off the regular price of coach seats. The downside was that the train's departure from the Fargo Amtrak train station is 3:19 in the morning!
