Hard Times Blues
(W.C. Handy)
Played by
New Orleans Blue Nine
Globe 7018
(78 rpm record)

This one is hard to find in the discographies. Johnson & Shirley don’t mention it. Brian Rust sort-of does in his Jazz discography. He lists it as follows:

“…HARLEM HARMONY KINGS
Probably a black band: 2 t / tb / as / vn / p /bj / bb / d. New York, c. April, 1921.
A-104-1 Hard Times Blues
Pm 12003…NOTE: Grey Gull and Radiex as NEW ORLEANS BLUE NINE…”

This was transcribed from a copy on the Globe label. I no longer have this record. I transcribed it then sold it about 20 or so years ago. That’s why I don’t have the original label in this video. The Paramount label lists a different composer and the singular version of the title (i.e., "Hard Time Blues").

I added some photos of old New Orleans, but this band may very well have come from Harlem. So who knows? This is a rare one, I’ve never heard it anywhere else on the internet or YT. Please correct me in the comments if I’m wrong.
