Rachmaninoff composed two sets of études, Op. 33 and Op. 39. These études are particularly special as they are "picture studies" and they are musical expressions of visual images and feelings he wanted to address. He did not specify his sources of inspiration as he wanted the listener to paint their own personal visualizations. However, he revealed some of them to the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, who wanted to orchestrate 5 of his études.
