In this final episode of “Life in the Roman Empire – Pt 8: Walking the Roman Street,” Walking The Text’s beloved friend and colleague, Dr. Randall Smith, explains how the apostle Paul used imagery from the “Roman Street” to encourage Ephesian Christians to embrace the call, conduct, and conflict of life as citizens of God’s Kingdom. Just as barbarian soldiers assimilated into the Roman army, Paul urged followers of Jesus to embrace their new identity, not as second-class citizens, but as faithful warriors equipped with the armor of their new king.

However, their calling as citizens of God’s Kingdom required them to conduct their lives differently. Paul emphasized this by focusing on the word “walk,” drawing on Roman street imagery—the slave market, victory parades, bathhouses, theatres, night watchmen, and pubs—to illustrate how a believer’s conduct should stand in stark contrast to the world around them.

Unfortunately, this calling often sparked conflict, which is why Paul closes his letter by returning to the metaphor of soldiers assimilating into the Roman army. He reminds believers to put on the full armor of God, standing firm against the enemy in service to their king. By the end of “Life in the Roman Empire – Pt 8: Walking the Roman Street,” you'll gain rich, relatable ways to connect the context of Paul’s writings with your everyday life!
