Estuarine Mapping is a new framework developed by Dave Snowden that can be used for strategy development. It is based on the EU Field Guide process of constraint mapping and involves three basic steps: describing the current state, visualizing the items in terms of time and energy required to make changes, and deciding which items to take immediate action on. Estuarine Mapping generates a granular list of items that can be managed and can be used alongside a Strategy Deployment approach. The process can be used to plan change as portfolios of micro-projects that nudge the complex system(s). The framework uses metaphors to break habitual patterns and empower teams to start journeys. The process creates numerous data points at a fine granularity, which stops premature convergence and enables spotting the gorillas. The Estuarine Mapping process is still in development, and updates are expected every month or so for the next couple of years. Dave will present us the current status.

Dave is the creator of the Cynefin Framework and originated the design of SenseMaker®, the world’s first distributed ethnography tool. He is the lead author of Managing complexity (and chaos) in times of crisis: A field guide for decision-makers, a shared effort between the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the European Commission’s science and knowledge service, and the Cynefin Centre.
