【日本の祭】中津祇園: Unity and Spirit - Nakatsu Gion: Oita, Japan

おいさー、おいさー、ちょいさー、ちょいさー。大きな掛け声やお囃子。7月の終わりごろ、気温だけでなく大分県中津が最も熱くなる、それが祇園祭です。御神体を載せた御神輿と華麗な祇園車が町をまわります。祇園車を全力で引きながら走る「練り込み」、男たちが高々と御神輿を上げる姿には鳥肌を立てずにはいられません。

「上祇園」「下祇園」からなる中津祇園祭で今回は「下祇園」に焦点を当て、お神輿を担ぐ角木町を密着でドキュメンタリー撮影しました。

忍耐、団結、魂の祭り。それが中津祇園かもしれません。

１週間程度密着取材をさせて頂き、町の人々の祇園祭に対する想いと、伝統を引き継いで町全体で継承し、そして心から楽しんでいる姿に感銘を受けました。中津祇園の興奮と高揚感を少しでも動画でお伝えできれば嬉しいです。多くの皆様にご協力をいただき、中津祇園を撮影することができました。本当にありがとうございます。これから国内及び海外に向けて、少しでも中津祇園の魅力を発信できればと思います！

"Oisa! Oisa! Choisa! Choisa!" The powerful shouts and festive music fill the air. At the end of July, it’s not just the temperature that rises, but the spirit of Nakatsu, Oita, during the Gion Festival. The sacred mikoshi carrying the deity and the magnificent Gion floats parade through the town. The sight of the “Nerikomi,” where men sprint while pulling the Gion floats with all their might, and the image of them lifting the mikoshi high above their heads, is nothing short of breathtaking.

This year, I focused on “Shimo-Gion” in the Nakatsu Gion Festival, which comprises both “Kami-Gion” and Shimo-Gion, and followed the men of Tsunoki-machi as they carried the Mikoshi in an immersive documentary. Endurance, unity, and spirit—that’s what Nakatsu Gion might be all about. During our week-long coverage, I was deeply moved by the dedication of the town’s people to the Gion Festival, their commitment to preserving tradition, and the genuine enjoyment they share in the celebration. I hope this video can convey even a fraction of the excitement and exhilaration of the Nakatsu Gion Festival.
