We have made it to the end of this summer holiday, and as one final send off, I decided to record a song that would capture everything I wanted to express growing my humble piano channel this summer. So, just like how it started, I end my summer recording journey with another selection from the “Animenz top 10 most difficult arrangements” list - My Dearest.

I don't think any song captures the beauty of Animenz’ signature classical + anime arrangement style better than ‘My Dearest.’ To be honest, I even prefer it to Unravel, which often takes the spotlight due to its sheer difficulty in technique. While that arrangement is just as admirable in its own right, this song feels more personal, and was also the original catalyst for the modern Animenz sound as we know it. It has both simplistic and virtuosic sections that blend the harmony and melody of the original song with classical techniques. My favourite has to be the section from 3:00, where he writes a variation of the verse melody that almost resembles a cadenza from a Beethoven concerto, with its right hand rapid scales and arpeggios. This is followed by another variation of the chorus, where the melody is supported by simultaneous trills/tremolos in both hands.

I originally learned a slightly abridged version of this arrangement, due to time constraints in a live performance I gave this summer in Hong Kong. That was also a very fulfilling experience and I was very moved to see that people were inspired by the story behind the piece, and anime piano music in general. This is why the song also cuts off early here, however, I added back the coda almost as a mini ‘encore’ to use as my tribute - to say thank you to everyone who supported me during this journey, similar to how Animenz felt when he wrote it. Ironically, just like him, I will be taking a break after this, but this break is full of hope, as I’m sure I will be back soon! Thank you again to everyone who listened to me share my music this summer!
