Higher Learning: Tradition & Innovation | Charlie Jeffery, Shailendra Raj Mehta and Sandeep Sethi in conversation with Malashri Lal, introduced by Rashmi Sharma | Presented by York University

As societies evolve, so must systems of learning; education and innovation are indispensable to realties present and in-wait. Experts in education, and its many, shifting frameworks, come together to discuss abundant possibilities for ‘higher’ learning. Professor Charlie Jeffery is the Vice-Chancellor and President at the University of York. He is interested in the optimal service research and education can render to social and economic welfare. Shailendra Raj Mehta is an Indian economist, President and Director at MICA, Ahmedabad, and a member of the Mission High-Level Committee (MHLC) of the Indian Knowledge System. Sandeep Sethi is Director of Education at MSMS II Museum Trust, Jaipur. He has conceptualised educational models which challenge societal barriers and are grounded by inclusivity and ideation. In conversation with esteemed writer and academic, Malashri Lal, they discuss the fundamental and forward-looking dimensions of learning.

Charlie Jeffery is Vice-Chancellor and President, University of York, and former Senior Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh. His academic background is in the study of politics. He is passionate about the role universities can play in bringing benefit to the places in which they are located, and was a central figure in the negotiation of the £1.3B Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal. Jeffery is currently working with further and higher education institutions, private sector partners and local authorities in and around York in shaping economic development programmes in the field of biotechnology and around York Central, one of the UK’s biggest brownfield development sites.

Shailendra Raj Mehta is the President, Director and Distinguished Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at MICA, in Ahmedabad, India. Earlier, he headed Auro University and Ahmedabad University. Before that, he had stints at Duke CE and the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (joint appointment) and Purdue University, where he taught Economics and Strategic Management.

Sandeep Unnithan is the Managing Editor with India Today magazine in New Delhi, where he writes on national security. He is the author of Black Tornado: The Three Sieges of Mumbai 26/11 and Operation X. The Bangla edition of the latter was released in Dhaka on November 8, 2021, in the run-up to the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the 1971 war.

Rashmi Dhanwani leads the Art X Company, a strategic consultancy for the cultural sector focused on strategy, audience development and sector research. She has a Masters' degree in Cultural and Creative Industries from King’s College London and is the recipient of the ARThink South Asia Fellowship (2011-12), a participant fellow at ‘The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School and the Weill Music Institute’ and a 2017 Global Fellow of the International Society for Performing Arts (ISPA), New York. Dhanwani has also founded Arts Culture Resources India, a network and platform for cultural professionals in India and South Asia.
