Felix Mendelssohn composed Verleih uns Frieden, a setting of Martin Luther’s prayer, following a short visit to the Vatican in 1831. Nine years later Robert Schumann wrote “(t)he small piece deserves to be world famous and will become so in the future; the Madonnas of Raphael and Murillo cannot remain hidden for long.” It was adapted for organ accompaniment in 1980. The text translates to:
Mercifully grant us peace,
Lord God, in our times.
For there is no other,
Who could fight for us,
But you alone, our God.
