On Wednesday 10 June 2020, UCL Chemical Engineering hosted a taster lecture entitled: Mixing of complex non-Newtonian fluids for oral healthcare applications.

Abstract:

Oral healthcare products, such as toothpastes, play an important role in maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing disease. Modern formulations are complex mixtures which combine ingredients that improve oral hygiene and deliver good rheological properties and stability. Manufacturing of toothpastes involves mixing of polymeric suspensions that have complex rheology (non-Newtonian fluids) and of solids. In this lecture we will explore the challenges encountered in the mixing of complex fluids and of solids relevant to toothpaste manufacturing. We will show how computational and experimental tools can be used to improve the mixing and to help us design new, more efficient processes.
