Remarkable Huka Falls + Sailing to Maori Rock Carvings in TAUPO | NZ Road Trip Vlog 3/3

In this final vlog from our latest NZ road trip, we made our way from Whanganui to Taupo. First stop after a long drive was naturally to get some food of course! :)

We ate at a Vietnamese restaurant in Taupo called Saigonese Eatery. Having not had any proper Asian food for a few days during our trip, we were delighted to come across Vietnamese cuisine. Lovely, friendly staff and tasty meals to warm our bellies for the day ahead.

Saigonese Eatery
Address: 2 Mansell Road, Nukuhau, Taupo 3377
Hours: Wed–Mon 11am–9pm
Closed Tuesdays

If you want to do the Huka Falls walk alongside the Waikato River bank, don't make the same mistake we did and make sure you take your right (instead of left) when you get to the Otumuheke Stream Spa Park. You can also enjoy a free soak in these warm geothermal mineral waters.

There are public changing rooms and toilets there as well as a coffee kiosk there too. For directions to this spot using Google Maps enter "Spa Thermal Park". It's a short walk down to Otumuheke Stream. When you go down to the stream, keep it on your left and the coffee kiosk on your right and you'll be on your way to Huka Falls.

If you want to skip the 90 min return walk and just get straight to the Huka Falls bridge which gives you an incredible up close view of the powerful falls, you'll need to get to "Huka Falls Carpark Access". Here you can park your car and you're only a few short meters away from the bridge and look out points over Huka Falls.

The carpark is off Huka Falls Road (which also has another great look out point on Huka Falls Loop Rd).

On our second day in Taupo we went sailing with Sail Barbary to see the Ngatoroirangi Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings. Sail Barbary is New Zealand's only commercial electric yacht. Zero emissions, very quiet, no fumes and eco friendly. It was a great way to enjoy Lake Taupo and to see the Maori rock carvings which you can only reach by water.

If you're going in summer, after viewing the Maori rock carvings there's a chance for you to jump into the water for a swim if you're keen so bring some togs and a towel if you do!

We got our tickets through Bookme:

Our day ended at Waipahihi Botanic Garden which is a nice peaceful reserve in Taupo created from scratch by volunteers.

Waipahihi Botanical Reserve
Address: Cnr Hyde Avenue &, Shepherd Road, Waipahihi, Taupo 3330
Hours: Mon–Sun 8am–7:30pm

This Taupo vlog is the last of our 3 part New Zealand, January road trip! We hope you've enjoyed following us along on our NZ travels :)
