HOW TO REINVENT YOURSELF
Starting Over After Age 50
Thom Singer shares his path to a new life

I am very focused on the idea of “how to reinvent yourself”. if you watch this short video, I want you to know I understand why you are here. I felt stuck for a long time. Just before I turned fifty I decided I would strive to make age 50 to 75 the best years of my life. I have learned a lot in the last four years, and while still a work in progress, I have changed in countless ways.

Being in my comfort zone was just too comfortable and I was not growing.

The process of reinventing yourself is not easy. It takes time, and there will be all kinds of setback. Worse is how people will not even notice. The people closes to you will not even acknowledge you biggest efforts.

If you think that watching a video will be enough to change your path, you may not ever be able to make the strides necessary.

While my journey does not make me an expert, I am deeply committed to the process and I am seeing the changes.

I have made the motto "Try New Things" a way of life, and I have some tips on “How to Reinvent Yourself” that I will share with you now. I hope these help you think about ways to start making changes.

My tips include:
1 Declare the intention. I began telling everyone about my plan to make age 50 to 75 the best years of my life just before that milestone birthday. In my writing, podcasts, speeches, and in-person conversations I worked that goal into every communication. I knew that it was a long path and trying to do it in secret would make it easy to fail.

2. Study and Learn. I have looked at countless essays and courses on how to reinvent yourself. Most (like this blog post) are simplistic and just part of the information your will need. I listen to podcasts on the subject and anything related. And I took up an interest in eastern philosophies. I have become a student of Taoism and look to learn much more about this ancient way of life. You can get the same inspiration I have found in the Tao by looking at the teachings of Confucius, The Buddha, Jesus, etc… Find a philosophy that resonates and study hard over a long period of time. And put the things you learn into practice.

3. Mediation. Recently I began a daily meditation practice and it is not easy. But the result is I am able to better live in the present, tame my mind, and set my intention and attention throughout the day. Many times in the past I attempted meditation, but always felt I was doing it wrong. When I learned that meditation is not a skill most will ever master perfectly, but something you practice, I learned to embrace the thirty minutes daily.

4. Know who you want to become. Get clarity on the person you would like to become and begin to act in a manner that is fitting to this person. Let you soul take the power over from your ego. Your actions will become habits. I fully believe we can change and grow. Our personality traits are not set in stone. But it takes time (years) to reinvent and have it stick. Start today as the longer you wait the longer it will be until you experience results.

5. Forgiveness. Forgive others and forgive yourself. Along the way people have done things that have hurt you. Often their actions were not even intended to bring you pain, but even if they were, let it go. Forgive them. Holding onto hate only drags you down. But also, you have to forgive yourself. We all have made mistakes along the way, and often we carry the weight of these misguided actions. Forgiveness, of self and others, will lighten your load and let you excel more quickly moving forward.
