A couple of images in my local park with a Fujinon SF 250mm lens, a Toyo Field 810M and Shanghai GP3 100 film.

The Fujinion SF 250mm f5.6 is a soft focus lens that is normally used wide open with one of two "strainer" disks – yellow dot or red dot – that selectively block light from the outside of the aperture where the the de-focused image is formed to control the amount of soft focus effect. The strongest soft focus effect is wide open f5.6 with no strainer; the yellow dot strainer gives less soft focus and the red dot strainer the least. The intention of the strainers is more to control the amount of light passing through the lens rather than the amount of soft focus effect, because stopping the lens aperture down more than about f11 will remove the soft focus entirely and the images are relatively "normal". While intended for 4x5 and 5x7 it covers 8x10 when well stopped down if some softness (no pun intended) int he corners is acceptable..

The lens has a 3 elements in 3 groups design which is less than typical for even a budget lens like a tessar which is 4 elements because it's deliberately under-corrected for spherical aberration. As a rule the number of elements in a lens is an indication of the amount of correction it has, so the Fujinon SF will never be as sharp as a modern lens that usually has four, typically six or more elements.

The exercise today is to see how sharp it is when stopped down and whether it covers 8x10 reasonably well.
