Digicam Street Photography | Nikon CoolPix L610 in Omaha

When I first started collecting film & digital cameras I made a Facebook post asking my friends and family to let me know if they had any old digital cameras they weren't using any more. A neighbor messaged me saying he had two - one of them was the Nikon CoolPix L610. He let me borrow it and a few months later I've finally been able to make a video with it.

First off, I loved shooting with this camera. It was fast, snappy, easy to use (on full auto) and the LCD screen's quality helped me frame my shots and ascertain that I was getting what I intended. Not only that, the camera can record 1080p 30fps video so I could easily use this for both the photos and video in this...video.

What's its biggest drawback? The fact that it runs on two AA batteries. I used standard Amazon Essentials batteries with this camera - brand new - and it chewed through 6 of them in 2 hrs. No good. I checked a local store for the more expensive lithium powered AA batteries but those were over $20 for a 4 pack and no way I'm spending that kinda dough to power a camera like this.

How do I feel about the photos? Meh. They're too sharp, too crisp, too digital for my liking. And I'm not surprised. When these digicams moved away from CCD sensors in favor of CMOS and continued to pack megapixels onto the sensors, they lost me. There's no blooming in the highlights, there's no softness in the content of the image - everything is sharp, crisp digital blah. If I want that I can just use my iPhone.

Still, this camera is more fun to shoot with than my iPhone so I'll give it that. And I do really like the video it puts out - although I wish it were much less sharp. If you can snag one of these for free or just a few bucks at a garage sale or a thrift store, it's worth it just to try it out, but if you really want an image with more character straight out of camera I'd pass on this one.
