Abraham Maslow' Hierarchy of Needs is possibly the best known model of motivation. As a motivation theory, the hierarchy of needs is useful, but probably over-used.

LESSON NOTES

Abraham Maslow was a humanist psychologist. His hierarchy of needs model is very much consistent with Douglas McGregor's Theory Y (so do take a look at that video if you've not seen it:    • What are Douglas McGregor's Theory X ...  ).

Maslow suggested we have a set of needs that he arranged in a hierarchy from the most basic biological needs up to the need to be the best person we can be - which he called 'self-actualization'. In the video we use a five-level version of his hierarchy of needs:
Physiological needs
Safety and security needs
Social and belonging needs
Esteem needs - esteem of others and self-esteem
Self-actualization

There are issues, which we discuss, with this model. But, later theories do hark back to this one.

3. How well does Maslow'shierarchy of needs fit with your own personal sense of what motivates you? What works well for you - and what issues do you have with the model? (2 MC CPD Points)
4. Now think about how well this model seems to account for the behaviors of the people who work for and with you. Reflect on what your own experiences and make notes in your journal, notebook, or workbook. (2 MC CPD Points)
