The starting movement is the most important thing for a fast footwork in Badminton. You need to start fast, if you want to be able to get high to the corners. The keyelement here is a small jump performed before every approach to a corner, called split step. The landing after the split step generates a pretension in you legs that can be used to produce a greater impulse, if you push away right after the landing. That means on one hand, that the timing is important, so you want to land, when you now where to go.

The other crucial thing is the positioning of the feet during the split step. This positioning always depends on where you want to go, or where you expect the shuttle to come. If you want to get one corner, you have to push in the exact opposite direction to get maximum impulse into that direction. That means for example, if you want to get to the right corner at the net, you should position one foot on your left and behind you. That usually works best in offensive situation when you don't have to cover the sides, because your opponent cannot attack you there.

In defensive situations you usually don't know early, where your opponent plays the shuttle and if your opponent plays from the back, a smash to the sides is the most dangerous shot that you should cover. To do that you have to start to the side, so in defensive situations you should use a starting position that is parallel to the net, and allows to push to the side.
