作品について / Program notes

　大津シンフォニックバンド(OSB)委嘱作品、森島洋一音楽監督に献呈。
　私見では、関西の一般バンドは関東に比べて重厚なサウンドを特色とする団体が多いように思っています。森島音楽監督が指揮するOSBさんもその代表格で、それを前提に作曲しました。そのこともあってか、本作はテクニカルな面よりも指揮者の裁量とバンドのアンサンブルとのせめぎ合いに音楽の重点が置かれる作品となったと思っています。
　タイトルの「ナイトフォニー」とは、「夜」＋「響き」を意味する造語です。この作品を書く直前に木管五重奏とピアノのための「夜の響き」という曲を書きましたが、その続編、且つ最終楽章のような気持ちで作曲したのでこの様なタイトルとしました。

Nightphony for Wind Orchestra was commissioned by the Otsu Symphonic Band for their musical director, Yoichi Morishima. In my opinion, many community bands in the Kansai region perform with a stately, symphonic character compared to those of the Kanto region. OSB is amongst those, so I wrote based upon that idea. This work is focuses on a dialogue between the musical intent of the conductor and that of ensemble, rather than the technical aspects.
"Nightphony" is a coined word coming from "night" + "phon- (sound)". Just before this work, I wrote a song called "Sound of the Night" for woodwind quintet and piano. This is like a sequel, or the final movement, hense the title. (Chang-Su Koh)
