The Vedic tradition teaches us that our minds can be either our very best friend, or our very worst enemy. In this discussion of the 'Dharma of the Mind', Sri Dharma Pravartaka Acharya will explain to us what are the three mental qualities that lead to a liberated mind. Learn how to make your mind your friend!
“I have already explained to you about the three kinds Dharma by its association, respectively, with mind (manah), speech (vak) and action (karma). Among these I shall now explain the Dharma of the mind.” (Parama-Samhita Pancharatra, 12.4)
“Faith (shraddha), firmness (dhrti), and tranquility (prasada), these three are the Dharma of the mind. All the other [positive] activities of the mind are considered to be founded on the basis of these three divisions.” (Parama-Samhita Pancharatra, 12.5)
“One who has faith acquires knowledge; he is acceptable to the good; he is regarded as the proper man; and he is embraced also by God.” (Parama-Samhita Pancharatra, 12.6)
“By firmness one does not fall from the right path (dharma); by firmness one ceases to be bound by sorrow; by firmness one is not deluded by material happiness; by firmness one is not stricken by anxiety.” (Parama-Samhita Pancharatra, 12.7)
“Being tranquil, one does not trouble others; being tranquil, one does not become jealous; being tranquil, one does not become greedy; being tranquil, one is always happy.” (Parama-Samhita Pancharatra, 12.8)
“When these qualities are found in a man, either as being natural to his essence, or acquired by him by his own effort as a permanent habit of his mind, God is pleased with him.” (Parama-Samhita Pancharatra, 12.9)
“Association with people possessing these qualities, or hearing of those great ones, having great knowledge of these people becomes the means of gaining these qualities.” (Parama-Samhita Pancharatra, 12.10)
“Whatever is opposed to these three is called adharma. Those addicted to qualities that are opposed to these three come to grief in all their lives, present and future.” (Parama-Samhita Pancharatra, 12.11)
“Therefore a devotee of Vishnu, desiring to attain the accomplishment of his object (attaining to liberation) should discipline his mind in the practice of these three qualities.” (Parama-Samhita Pancharatra, 12.12)
