After 30 years, there are some pains that don’t fade — they just settle deeper.

Losing Kailyn didn’t just break my heart. It rearranged it.

I used to measure life in plans. Milestones. The future I imagined. I thought about teaching her things, walking her through seasons, watching her grow into the woman she was becoming.

Leukemia interrupted all of that.

I remember the day we heard the diagnosis. That word. Leukemia. It felt like the air left the room. I remember trying to stay strong. Trying to be the steady one. But inside, I was begging God for a miracle every single day.

I prayed clung to every promise. Not casually — desperately.

Some prayers were whispered. Some were cried out. Some were silent because there were no words left.

And yet, even in that valley, I saw something in her that I will never forget.

Peace.

Not every day. Not perfectly. But there was a sweetness in her spirit. A bravery. A trust. Sometimes I think she understood something about heaven that I was still learning.

When she went home to Jesus at ten years old, I felt both shattered and strangely held at the same time. Shattered because my arms were empty. Held because I knew whose arms she was in.

That feeling has never fully gone away.

I still miss the ordinary things. The simple things. The sound of her moving through the house. The way she said “Daddy.” The small conversations that didn’t seem important at the time.

Grief has taught me that the ordinary was the miracle.

There are days I still ask God why. Not angrily. Just honestly. Why ten? Why her? Why leukemia?

I don’t always get answers.

But I do get His presence.

And over time, I’ve come to understand something I couldn’t see in the beginning: losing Kailyn did not weaken my faith — it refined it. It stripped it down to what’s real. Not surface-level hope. Real hope.

The kind that believes in resurrection when you’ve stood at a graveside.

The kind that believes in reunion when you’ve said goodbye too soon.

I don’t carry her memory like a wound anymore. I carry it like a sacred trust.

Her life mattered.

Her ten years mattered.

And they continue to shape the man I am becoming.

One day, I will see her again. Not as a memory. Not as a photograph. But face to face. Whole. Laughing. Alive in ways I can barely imagine.

Until then, I continue to live in faith.

I love deeper. I pray harder. I hold my family closer. Because life is fragile — and eternity is real.

She will always be my daughter.

And I will always be her dad.

And that story is not finished.
