There have been seasons in my life when everything looked strong on the outside — but inside, I was tired.

Not tired from working hard.

I’ve never been afraid of work.

I was tired from carrying things I was never meant to carry alone.

Leadership has weight to it.

Being a husband has weight to it.

Being a father has weight to it.

And I’ve always felt deeply responsible.

Responsible to lead well.

Responsible to provide.

Responsible to protect.

Responsible to get it right.

But there comes a moment when responsibility slowly turns into pressure.

And pressure, if you’re not careful, turns into striving.

There was a particular night — not dramatic, not public — just quiet. Everyone else was asleep. The house was still.

I wasn’t.

My mind was running through conversations I wished I had handled better.

Opportunities I was trying to figure out.

People I was praying for.

My children — and the weight of wanting to guide them well.

That night, I realized something.

I was trying to manage outcomes that only God could hold.

And I was exhausted.

So I did something simple.

I stopped talking.

I stopped asking.

I stopped trying to figure everything out.

And I just sat there.

Not to perform.

Not to prepare a message.

Not to be “Joseph the leader.”

Just Joseph.

Just a son.

And in that quiet space, something shifted.

It wasn’t a voice.

It wasn’t a revelation.

It was presence.

The kind of presence that doesn’t demand anything from you.

The kind of presence that doesn’t measure your productivity.

The kind of presence that doesn’t ask you to explain yourself.

Just steady.

Just near.

In that moment, I realized how much of my life I’ve lived trying to move forward — build the next thing, launch the next vision.

And God wasn’t asking me to move.

He was asking me to be.

There’s something about being a father that teaches you this.

When my children were young, they didn’t always need answers.

They just needed me in the room.

They needed to know I was there.

And in that quiet night, I sensed the Father saying the same thing to me.

“You don’t need all the answers right now.
You just need to know I’m here.”

Because in His presence, I don’t have to be strong.

You can do everything right and still walk through heartbreak.

And when heartbreak comes, you don’t need strategy.

You need God.

In His presence, I’ve found something I can’t manufacture:

Peace that doesn’t depend on circumstances.

Hope that doesn’t disappear when plans change.

Strength that doesn’t come from willpower.

That night, I didn’t walk away with solutions.

The business still needed leadership.

The family still needed love.

The dreams still needed faith.

But I walked away lighter.

Because I remembered something simple:

I am not carrying this alone.

And I’ve learned this — the older I get, the more I understand:

The greatest gift isn’t breakthrough.

It’s nearness.

It’s waking up and knowing He’s here.

It’s walking through grief and knowing He’s here.

It’s building something new and knowing He’s here.

It’s sitting in the unknown and knowing He’s here.

In His presence, I am not defined by success.

In His presence, I am not crushed by failure.

In His presence, I am not destroyed by loss.

I am simply His.

And that is enough.
