On 9 November 2024, Sydney's Chinese community hub, Ashfield, hosted a grand celebration of the Diwali Indian festival. Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and has become a multicultural emblem in Australia, drawing residents and visitors from all walks of life. In Ashfield Townhall Square, colorful lights adorned the trees, casting a warm and festive glow that brought joy to all who gathered.
The celebration opened with Chinese community groups performing a vibrant display of traditional dances with colorful ribbons waving gracefully in the breeze, embodying the rich essence of Eastern charm and creating a striking scene.
Following this, artists from the Indian community took the stage, presenting meticulously choreographed traditional dances and music.
With the rhythmic beats of drums and enchanting melodies, the dancers conveyed the spirit of Diwali, sharing joy and blessings in a performance that was both visually and audibly captivating for the audience.
An Asian food street was also set up, attracting food lovers from near and far.
The stalls offered an array of Indian delicacies, from the unique spices of curries to crispy, delicious fritters and an assortment of sweets, letting attendees savor exotic flavors and bringing the cultures closer together through culinary delights.
In the midst of lively music, the Indian performers invited the audience to join in dancing, with rhythms rising and falling to the beat, and steps intertwining with the melody. Chinese, Indian, and Australian people joined hands, their laughter resonating under the night sky.
Faces from diverse backgrounds reflected the same joy in the glow of lights, hearts connecting in harmony, as if illuminated by stars, warming both the night and each other.
Local community representative Prashant Pandey shared, “Diwali, an ancient Indian festival, symbolizes light’s victory over darkness.
When the deity returned, ending years of exile, people lit lamps to celebrate this victory, spreading light to drive away darkness and bring new hope.
Here in this multicultural community, light is our common language. Tonight, lights brighten everything, banishing darkness and bringing warmth and hope for the future.
With government support, we stand together, enriching our community, and we hope for more cultural events like this to make our lives even more vibrant and diverse.”
Chinese community leader Guitang Lu expressed, “We gather here with people from different backgrounds, pursuing a more inclusive and harmonious community.
Diwali, originating from South Asia, means light to dispel darkness. Nowadays, the community needs more light and warmth.
The state-supported Asian Food @Ashfield project encourages people to showcase diversified cultural flavours.
This is a great opportunity for our multicultural community to celebrate diversity, share joy and support each other.”
As President of Ashfield Local Business Association Martin Pan introduced, Ashfield’s Asian Food Street, named “Asian Food @ Ashfield,” which is one of over 30 projects supported by the NSW Government’s Uptown program.
This project aims to transform Ashfield into a vibrant hub for Asian cuisine, multicultural activities, and folk arts in the inner west.
The program aspires to make Ashfield greater and invites Chinese and multicultural communities to join, shining together and promoting cultural integration.
People from different backgrounds gathered to celebrate the Festival of Lights on this beautiful night.
The twinkling lights on the trees illuminated smiling faces, witnessing the beauty of diversity and fusion harmony.
This is a traditional celebration and a cultural feast where various cultures meet and spark new inspiration.
From colorful ribbons and captivating performances to the aromas of delicious food, every event element is a testament to mutual respect and shared growth among different ethnicities.
