Canna Lily Propagation | How to Divide Rhizomes to Grow More Canna Lilies for Your Tropical Garden

I love free plants! Propagation is how you get plants for free. Propagating Canna Lillies is easy. Canna Lilies are one of the easiest plants to propagate, they can be propagated by seed and by division. This is a Canna Lily that I propagated last winter and now I am going to propagate it again. During the winter and spring, this Canna Lily grew a large rhizome underground. Now that it is April, I want to fill in my tropical garden with more Canna Lily plants.

To propagate a Canna Lily plant in the spring that is already growing, just dig up the plant and separate the stalks by dividing the rhizome. Each part of the rhizome will grow even more plants from the eyes on the rhizome. Many online sellers sell them as bulbs, but they are not bulbs they are rhizomes.

Most parts of the rhizome can be divided by hand. But, in some parts the rhizome is so thick, I had to use a knife to separate them. After dividing the rhizome, planting the Canna Lily is easy, just dig a hole and bury the rhizome a few inches deep, and give it lots of water.
