Wonderful Winter on the CLEVELAND WAY #3

Описание к видео Wonderful Winter on the CLEVELAND WAY #3

The Cleveland Way is a National Trail that sits in North Yorkshire National Park skirting the high moors on one side of a horseshoe, while the other side follows a dramatic coastline. I did feel confident in covering the 107.4ml/173km but the true test would be the effects of winter on my mental and physical capacity and also my hiking and camping gear.

This final video (of a three part series) covers days five, six and a half day to complete the journey of this winter challenge. We start the next part of the journey by packing our gear following a wild nights camping about a mile and half north of Whitby.

It is not long before we have completed our hike to the outskirts of Whitby which is known as Sandsend. Here we pass the thatched cottage that is the only thatched cottage on the North Yorkshire Coast. Next we enter Whitby passing through the Whale Bone Arch and passing the statue dedicated Captain Cook. We are now crossing the Swing Bridge in the centre of Whitby before entering the ancient streets. These streets lead us to the famous 199 steps which take us up to the entrance of Whitby Abbey. Unfortunately, we are too early to have admission to the Abbey, so we rejoin the Cleveland Way coastal path.

The first significant building we discover is Hornblower Lodge, which was built in 1858 as a lighthouse. However, in 1900 it was converted to a fog warning station and a new lighthouse was built alongside the existing structure, this 'new' lighthouse is still operational. We now travel up and down through the various coves and amuse ourselves with the fact that one of these is named 'Rain Dale' which is an ionic statement of the persistent winter conditions we have encountered along the route. Day five draws to an end and we find ourselves on the outskirts of Robin Hood's Bay.

Day six starts with us wondering down into the village of Robin Hoods Bay, discovering all the quaint shops before finding the Flagstaff Steps which lead us up onto the headland. Just a mile or so and we are descending again off the cliff side into Boggle Hole which is where we discover the YHA. Here we cross the bridge with a raging flooded river forcefully pushing past the Boggle Hole YHA. This torrent of water provides a clue as to what we will discover next. A diversion caused by weather erosion along the cliff edge so we are forced to take the diversion along muddy farm tracks.

We witness more erosion which finds a war pill box desperately hanging on the edge of the cliff and we observe that the invertible will eventually happen with the sea claiming this as a possible next victim. Further on we discover the Peak Alum Works, but in the torrential rain and now added mist to the formulae it is difficult to linger, so we push pass this POI.

The mist and rain are making safe travel on the high cliffs potentially dangerous so we wisely decide that moving inland and taking the Cinder Track of the Cleveland Way a safer alternative. Eventually, the Cinder Track deposits us in the centre of Scarborough. From here we consult the public tourist map and decide to visit Marina Drive. It is here we discover the old Toll House. We also see the tall sea waves crashing over the sea wall.
To finish the days hike we wonder along Scarborough harbour, which has a kind of haunted look in all the night mist with the fishing boats gently bobbing on the sea and the loud blare of the fog horn providing an eerie base line to the experience.

Day six and a half see us setting off from Scarborough with the tide out and the sun casting a glorious golden hue across the scene. However, more diversions cause extra time as we try to complete the last ten miles in a half day. But we are not beaten and finally arrive at Filey to complete our wintery challenge of the Cleveland Way.
