FORTUNA-a true story.
In 2019, while driving in her hometown of Asheville, North Carolina, Anya Hinkle heard a news feature on NPR affiliate, Blue Ridge Public Radio. It was the story of a young woman who escaped El Salvador at 16 years of age, after her father was murdered. She herself had been assaulted and threatened. So she left home, alone, and walked, rode buses, boats, trucks and atop the infamous “La Bestia,” a freight train that runs north through Mexico. After entering the US as an unaccompanied minor and asylum seeker, she spent the following 8 years fighting deportation court orders. In February 2023 she was granted US residency.
