2024 Maserati Ghibli Trofeo Review: can it take on the BMW M5?

Taking on the F90 M5 Competition is no easy task. A Ferrari-developed V8 should be the perfect answer, but it is?

I’m still not entirely sure what to make of the Maserati Ghibli Trofeo, over two years after driving one. On paper, it’s brilliant. Yes, the 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 really does come from Ferrari, only the Maserati uses a cross-plane crank instead of the flat-plane you’ll find in a F8 Tributo or 488 GTB. It has 580hp - 45hp less than M5 - but the Trofeo sends all of its power to the rear wheels, so is more eager to slide by accelerates slower (0-62mph in 4.4 seconds, or 3.0 seconds dead for the M5). Still sounds good, right? Both figuratively and literally. But as I’ll do my best to explain, there’s a lot holding the Trofeo back…
